Published on the occasion of the exhibition The Restless Earth (La Triennale di Milano, April 28–August 20, 2017) the volume, edited by Massimiliano Gioni and Micola Brambilla, deals with this highly topical theme marking the global scenario and contemporary history through the works of more than sixty artists from various countries around the world, including Wolfgang Tillmans, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Adrian Paci, Steve McQueen, Mona Hatoum, Yto Barrada, Francis Alÿs, Adel Abdessemed and many others.
The earth is restless and artists become witnesses to historical events by merging their intimate imagery with the story of social and political changes.
The works reveals a renewed confidence in the responsibility of art and artists to recount and transform the world: not only images of conflict, but also images as a place for meeting, confrontation and exchange of views. From these stories – suspended between the historical canvas and a first-hand account – there emerges a conception of art as lyrical reportage, emotional documentary and as living,
urgently needed testimony.
Restless Earth deals with migrations: an exhibition that is presented as an exercise in empathy and an experiment in understanding and dialogue between cultures.
