The Nicola Trussardi Foundation is a no profit institution for the promotion of contemporary art and culture. Neither a museum nor a collection, the Trussardi Foundation acts as an agency for the production and the diffusion of contemporary art in a wide variety of contexts and channels.
Under the direction of president Beatrice Trussardi and with the artistic direction of Massimiliano Gioni, in 2003 the Nicola Trussardi Foundation has decided to concentrate its resources on the realization of contemporary art events in the public spaces of the city of Milan. After many years of activity in the exhibition spaces of Palazzo Marino alla Scala, the Nicola Trussardi Foundation has decided to explore new territories and modes of presenting contemporary art, by pushing the boundaries of the spaces traditionally devoted to today’s creativity. The city of Milan will become the stage for the Foundation’s incursions in the field of contemporary: the city thus function both as a source of inspiration and a privileged site for the Foundation’s projects and activities.
Along with its exhibition program, the Foundation will also promote a series of more agile projects (such as publications, inserts in magazines, mail projects etc) devoted to the diffusion of contemporary art in every aspect of our daily life.

How does the Foundation operate?
The decision to take contemporary art directly to the city’s streets is a natural evolution of the earlier activities of the Foundation, and of the Trussardi tradition, which has always sought out new possibilities for the interaction between the Milan audience and the liveliest expressions of contemporary culture.
In keeping with this legacy, the Foundation works on the creation of temporary events to demonstrate that art can give a new identity and international visibility to the city, entering our everyday and public existence to enrich it with unexpected languages and experiences.
The Foundation spreads and disperds itself in the city and beyond: in each event and publication, in its website and on every other occasion, the Foundation aims at creating new spaces of expression for contemporary art. Anytime the Foundation exposes itself, it aspires to open a platform for artists. The Nicola Trussardi Foundation is a bridge, a transmission mechanism between artists and audiences.

How old is the Foundation?
The Nicola Trussardi Foundation was created in 1996. In the past it has been mainly devoted to art, fashion, design and culture at large. In January 2003 the Nicola Trussardi Foundation has left its exhibition spaces in Palazzo Marino alla Scala in order to disperse contemporary art directly in the city of Milan: the Foundation thus becomes a laboratory for the exploration of both contemporary art and city life.

What is the Foundation doing?
In 2003 the Nicola Trussardi Foundation has decided to change both its strategies and its interests: the Foundation focuses all its energies and resources on contemporary art, producing or exhibiting ambitious works by the most challenging artists of today.
Inspired by similar experiences in London and New York (Art Angel, Public Art Fund), the Nicola Trussardi Foundation aims at presenting contemporary art in both historical and symbolic spaces of the city of Milan, initiating a dialogue - or at times a confrontation - with the public. Along with the exhibition program, the Foundation will produce books and publications, which will circulate independently from the exhibitions, trying to offer another platform to the work of artists. “Changing its language and its structure for each project, the Foundation is free to work in very different situations and contexts, respecting the needs of both artists and audiences” says artistic director Massimiliano Gioni.
“The Foundation is a flexible structure. It’s not a museum neither a collection: it’s rather a production center for the diffusion of contemporary art” explains president Beatrice Trussardi. “The Foundation thus works on creating different occasions of dialogues between many institutions, in the city and beyond: the Nicola Trussardi Foundation is a machine for exploring contemporary art but also a new way to promote our contemporary culture”.
The collaboration with national and international institutions contributes to make the Foundation an ideal link between different ways to approach and support contemporary art and culture.
